Nothing that is self-custody only will ever reveive widespread adoption. 80%+ of the population will always want some sort of recourse in case they forget a password or have funds stolen. BTC may be used as you describe, but it would be through more consumer friendly "trusted custody". You already see early examples like cashapp. These banks will hold reserves and make txns instant and balance the books. But they cant print money when reserves run out so it probably wouldn't be adopted for mainstream use.
