In the US politics and business have now merged. Even if Trump is impeached and his appointees are largely replaced, the genie is out of the bottle. The new game is getting elected or appointed to political positions and using them to carve out and protect your corporate niche. I expect to see this mirrored at the state level soon, and become pervasive throughout the system. No more political lobbying, now the game is direct takeover.

An IR degree requires you to know at least one other language which opens up opportunities to teach English abroad or to translate, qualifies you for work in everything from intelligence agencies to corporations doing international business, and depending on your school typically has enough economics courses built in to qualify you for a minor in that field. It's a pretty cool degree, but it has specialized applications. If you didn't bother to research them first and make sure that they are of interest to you then that's your problem.
