The optimal leverage for long-term holding of QQQ is roughly 2, while the optimal long-term leverage for holding SPY is a little under 3.
In this uncertainty though, you are correct that there is excessive drawdown; however, even 3X leverage on an index is unlikely to ever see a blow out like XIV's thanks to the circuit breakers.
