I should've added *historically* for the US. And even if you swapped various... American ethnic groups for Belgians, you still wouldn't be able to reach their sorts of tax numbers without also nationalizing healthcare. That is, trillions of dollars converting from "hospital & health insurance company revenue" to "government tax revenue" while taking on the expenditure of, you know, the government paying for healthcare services.

People would hold the currencies of their relevant trading partners. There'd be slightly more friction to ((global trade)) but it's not some iron law of the universe that there must be one single reserve currency.
