Before 2018 or so even u.s. citizens could degenerately trade on margin

How many margin, otherwise known as leverage, account works is that you put up some money of your own as a stake and then the exchange lends you some money to trade with

If you say you have 1 BTC, if you go 5X leverage you will get 5 BTC worth to either sell or buy with
If your trade goes the right way you get to keep your profits (if BTC goes up $100 and you're on 5x leverage therefore you get $500)
But, if your losses become more than your actual staked amount (say your levered 5 BTC losses 1 BTC worth of value across all of them) then you get "liquidated" which means the exchange takes all your staked money

Hence, it's basically a way to multiply your gains if you win or your losses if you lose
