During the height of the last glacial maximum when the oceans absorb the greatest amount of CO2 out of the atmosphere, atmospheric CO2 fell to around 180 parts per million. People always talk about the future timeline of the earth and mention the sun turning into a red giant as the big extinction event, but the reality is the great earth death is much more proximate because when atmospheric CO2 falls to below 150 ppm plants can no longer complete metabolic processes and die from starvation as they can't photosynthesize glucose above their base energy needs.

As the Earth's core cools, volcanism can no longer replace CO2 lost due to carbon fixation and the result is a gradual decline of atmospheric CO2 as the carbon cycle has no magic knowledge of the metabolic requirements of plants, and if you extend the trend line out we cross that 150 ppm threshold in a few million years, which would be the death of almost all life on earth.

The planet got a hail Mary pass at the last minute by having a species show up that really loves pulling absolute shitloads of carbonaceous rock and oil out of the ground and burning it, replacing what volcanism is no longer sufficient to do. Human beings are not the destroyers of earth, we are it's saviours.
