Nice find! unless it was practically on the surface i'd just assume it was lost before the park was established, check old maps or directories, maybe there was a house/homestead or business operation in there somewhere that would be worth focusing your detecting around.

Yeah I like metal detecting, the equinox 800 is a good machine but most of the battle is getting on good ground. earlier this summer I hit an old abandoned swimming pool in the woods, it hadn't been hit before so I got a few silbers. Seeing the shine of silver in the dirt clod is a wonderful feel, good luck and be sure to post your finds.
