A screener like https://finviz.com/screener.ashx or your broker's research tools should let you find a bunch of tickers relevant to an industry. You can also start the other way and consider really good or really bad companies you know about, then Wikipedia will say whether they're public or private/what their ticker is.

Next you'll want to look up historical price action and earnings somewhere like TradingView, balance sheet & financial info somewhere (I like MarketWatch), and visit the company's Investor Relations page for news, earnings calls, and investor presentations. Only then should you begin to factor in degen opinions from stock forums or a ticker's StockTwits page or /smg/.

Once that's all done you should have enough background to look at a chart, get a feel for where it is and where it's going, as well as understand the kind of news that will make a stock moon or crash and by how much.
