i am not defending ridiculous rents. i'm saying that rents should not be this high and that people should not have to roommatecuck to afford a 600 square foot box. and it's not a problem unique to cities. it's a problem everywhere, it's a problem in my flyover hometown -- and it's a recent phenomena, see pic.

and me, personally, i've given up. next summer i will buy, in my flyover hometown, a $150-180k house with a low six figure down payment. i work remotely and make $103k/year. the mortgage will be paid off in record time. i'd prefer to live where i do now, in the suburbs, but the cost of renting and home ownership is insane.
