Use the money to start your own business.

You can find courses that will teach you how to learn a skill and sell that, and grow that into a business that runs without you. This is the most likely scenario your Gramps is trying to teach you, as most immigrants got wealthy owning their own businesses.

I'd still take 5k and go for some moonshots on crypto though, it's too easy to pick a few and make out like a bandit.
