It's very like at some point in the past even more inept people had more power, and even more absurd things were happening. If we lived in the middle ages/ancient times (in any continent, not just Europe) and were forced to follow whatever rituals people did during those times, knowing the things we know now, we would give anything to travel back to 2020.

In many bizarre ways the world right now is the best it has ever been, you just became more aware of some bigger picture problem. High complexity conscious life is fucked. Read Schopenhauer.
