you would cap out your losses at 100%, you can lose more than your investment. so they are "safer" than leverage if things go the wrong way.

leveraged ETFs track DAILY performance. so if you have $100 and it goes down 10%, you have $90. Now market closes, and reopens at $90. It goes down 10%, it's at $81. So you experienced two 10% down days, but only lost 19% of your investment, not 20%. If the underyling index loses 33%, a LETF can absolutely lose 100% or close to it, but i have not seen this ever happen(what ETF has gone down 33% in one day?) Sideways markets can hurt LETFs because of how percentages work. But take a look at SOXLs performance compared to SOXX, it did more than 3x SOXX's performance in the last few years, so if you can catch a trend you benefit more on the upside as well. They also come with very high fees, so that cuts into your total gain. make sure you understand these tradeoffs
