That book is — with full sincerity — extremely based. Hadot gets into the weird, mystical aspects of Platonism with no prior warning. While he lacks grounds for certain claims about the Parmenides, it's still interesting to theorize with him. Plus, he understood the Socratic mystery at the heart of the Symposium better than any of his Anglo-American contemporaries (like Vlastos), although many have since come to an awareness of what it means to be a philosopher in the Socratic sense.

It would be strange, if not insane, for someone to assign/read it as "Ancient Philosophy 101." It assumes some familiarity with esoteric thought.
