I still can't wrap my head around FOREX. I mean, yes, I know HOW it works. But what's the appeal?

In traditional investing, you invest in a company and get part ownership of it. That company then attempts to raise the value of its own shares through producing goods and services which consumers are willing to pay for, and generating a consistent stream of revenue to continue the trend. Those goods and services improve quality of life for people who buy it, and investors are happy too. If it fails, oh well, but at least the investors have a general understanding why that company failed its goals.

But currencies? Where does the value of currency come from? Where are the companies that produce goods and services of tangible, concrete benefit whose wise or poor decisions either raise or lower that value? If that's not how the value of any given currency is determined, then what? Is wild speculation and inherent volatility the only purpose and drive behind its day-to-day value?

Whats the best hedging strategy using SPY options? I assume I want long dated puts with a relatively low premium and slow decay.
