It rewards Machivellian tactics because of how the system is propped up to reward those who chase the dollar at any cost necessary, even if it means fucking over someone else (or the health and livelihood of millions) in the process. Altruism doesn't do you any favors in finance or politics. Being a backstabbing bullshitter that doesn't care about your fellow man is what gets you to the top, even if it ends up in situations like Enron, the housing market crash, and hormone altering chemicals and carcinogenic contents polluting the water supply.
