I believe it has to do with margin lending, and the amount of leveraged longs. If their trades go bad, they have to force-liquidate everything including financial instruments tied to mortgages (MBSes), and the domino effects cause property values to drop, which destroys the equity home-owners have, which can trigger foreclosures

Can someone please help me out here? Is this even close to correct?
