If it's the S&P 500 index, you could go international. You could also invest in REITs, or Bonds. All of these correlate with the S&P 500, but it would mean a significant amount of diversification.

No there aren't. There are short time periods where the S&P 500 lost a lot, but no long-term periods. The worst decades were 1929-1939 and 1999-2009, and those were only mildly bad.
