I don't have the data that you're looking for, but the hunch you have is correct. Redistribution of wealth would remove so much value from said wealth that you'd end up just destroying the value that you're trying to redistribute. This would leave all the working classes with pretty much the same level of wealth that they started with, however there would now be few job opportunities, as equality of wealth would render employment almost impossible, as there's no one with the upfront capital to pay anyone to do anything. At this point society collapses and the majority starve to death, those who survive being those with hunting skills or who already had a homestead in a safe environment. The working class become the peasant class, and the state reigns dominant. See "USSR" for more.
