>China’s industrialisation is unprecedented. The last time the ‘king of the manufacturing hill’ got knocked off the throne was when the U.S. surpassed the UK just before WW1. It took the U.S. the better part of a century to rise to the top; the China-US switch took about 15 or 20 years. China’s industrialisation, in short, defies comparison.
China's incredibly fast rise, doing in 20 years what it took America 100 years to do (eclipse the top manufacturing power in the world), is owed mainly to US offshoring. We simply gave China the title; they barely had to compete for it.
This is why I vote "No Confidence" in our elites. They are short-sighted money grubbers. This is also why I work for a privately held firm, not a publicly traded one; I don't want my company to be beholden to the next quarterly report. I want long term thinking and strategic growth, which my company offers. I am now even getting in the ear of the CEO; he has read a couple of my emails to him and has responded saying he likes what he read and likes my ideas for Asian expansion.
We may be the first U.S. coal mining company to go to Asia. Why? Because we have a leadership with balls. They aren't beholden to shareholders and aren't living in fear of lawsuits in case they fail to do "due diligence." They can take chances because they are risking their own family fortune.

I wish you as good of a convalescence as is possible.
Have a lump of coal as a gift, which I give as a kind gesture.

This lady I was just talking with about my job didn't even understand the difference between metallurgical coal and thermal coal. She was just saying no coal should be used. I explained that China uses 6-7 times as much coal as we do, then she said she didn't want to get political or else she'll have to berate me about a "certain fat criminal," i.e. Trump.
Trump Derangement Syndrome is very real, and Coal = Trump in some people's heads. It's bizarre just to be talking about the properties of coal and mining methods and then suddenly I'm a Trumper under attack for being seditious or some shit. Trump didn't even help the coal industry in his first term; production kept falling and the coal plants kept closing or being converted to natural gas. I support Trump because Biden definitely has it in for coal while Trump is just indifferent unless they swing the election for him (like Pennsylvania miners do), but I am not even a hardcore Trump guy.

You're absolutely right that a lot of people have no idea what actually goes into making civilization work. Mining, agriculture, logging, fishing, and of course manufacturing, logistics, freight of all sorts. The economic base is something most people don't deal with directly; instead, they go to a store and food is there, they flip a switch and light comes on, they drive around and gas stations are plentiful and don't run out of fuel anymore.

I'd prefer to educate this fellow on the merits of coal and other hydrocarbon energy sources.

Steelbro, if I get this met coal job, then our interests will be quite aligned. Let's make a lot more steel for the world. We need an infrastructure overhaul anyway (but not a green energy transition).

I may do it. I may jump to working strictly in a metallurgical coal mine just for the sense of future job security.
So many coal-fired plants are scheduled to shut down in the next few years that many coal miners working today will be out of a job soon if these shutdowns come about.
I'm sick of working in a dying industry and hearing about layoffs. So for this reason, and for a person one related to family, there is a certain met coal mine I might apply to and have a serious shot at getting hired at.

But they'll probably still try to shove wind and solar down our throats.
