Nice, yes I started with gold/silver then bought some platinum/palladium and then that got me thinking about lesser known rare metals.

I would always hear things about rare earth elements too, that they are being used increasingly for new technology (even stuff like smart cars, smartphones etc). Often in a negative light people would talk about how it was bad to use all these rare earth materials for new technology, one because they are rare but also the mining process. So they are rare and increasingly being used for future technology?

The purpose of using these metals is because they have certain specific properties that make them the best possible materials for certain technological applications. For example, to get the best memory storage you need specific rare earth metals. As data requirements increase you need the rare earth metals.

That is why I say that Rare earth metals are the Chainlink of metals. Just like Schwab sees Blockchain Oracles as necessary for the fourth industrial revolution, the same is true for rare earth metals.
