In fact, the world may somehow objectively be fucked up and as such people such as yourself might succumb to depression by "seeing the world for what it really is", and yet people like me either a) do not care about the poor state of the world or b) are in such a state of self-denial that c) we are more happier/content than you are.

my gut reaction and my undergraduate level readings in the humanities from many years ago tell me that technology has a large part to play with our unhappiness. we're too connected, we have access to too much shit, we can't concentrate and we're just injected with information that we cannot parse and make sense of. I don't think there's any way to test that theory though, instead we can only speculate.
