I wouldn't buy advertisements for monero. It will make it seem like it's a product of some corporation instead of a community project. The most important aspect of community outreach is getting people to make wallets and teaching them how to use it as money, not as an investment. I make donations to websites I visit and encourage them to post monero addresses on their blogs. I go on IRC and give away some (~0.1 at a time) monero for free to new users.
Brand awareness and name recogniton is not the problem. People are familiar with cryptocurrencies, and are aware that most cryptocurrencies are a scam.
