Let's say I wrote a smart contract for buying söy futures, or a gambling smart contract that pays out depending on the outcome of an event like a presidential election or a UFC fight. Smart contracts are open source, so the website/server/data source I will be depending on to settle the smart contract will be public knowledge. If someone wanted to game said smart contract, all they would have to do is hack/manipulate the source of information I am using. This isn't a huge problem now but when smart contracts become more commonplace the gaming of real world information will become a much more attractive way to cheat smart contracts. The solution to this is the chainlink blockchain, which creates a decentralized consensus about real world events that cannot be gamed and smart contracts can rely on to give them reliable information. Since this is a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist yet, there is no guarantee that chainlink will be a successful project down the line, considering that it could be replaced by a more successful network or be ruled entirely obsolete by a dApp or some other oracle problem fix. However, chainlink has one of the most active github repositories I have ever seen and really has the number of contributions that you would see in a top 20 or top 10 project. Plus, chainlink has the advantage of being a 4chan meme, guaranteeing that it becomes a cultural staple and that newfags will be continually exposed to it. If it is still around in a few years I could see it realistically being in the top 5.
