Its not that their job is completely unnecessary, but it could be accomplished with a college intern, or a pamphlet really.

Here's a typical "Sprint retrospective", where the team thinks over the last 2 weeks of work and decides what went well and what didn't go so well. This is 1 of exactly 2 opportunities when an agile coach is "useful" in any way.

>Stacy: *puts phone away*
>Stacy: "Ok so today for retro we're gonna do an activity called "Stop, Start, Continue. This is where we write out things that happened over the last 2 weeks on Post-its and say whether we want to start, stop, or continue!"
>devs spend 10 minutes writing out post-its
>devs then go over each category and discuss what worked and what didn't
>Stacy listens to conversation on a surface level and writes down 2 takeaway points
>meeting over
>Stacy sends out e-mail with takeaway points
>devs do the work themselves that they agreed to themselves
>Stacy makes probably 85k a year
