The structure of reddit is terrible for any kind of contentious topic. The up/down voting system means that the most controversial posts and opinions are default hidden, while the ones that appease the audience bias most rocket to the top. 4chan is the opposite, the most controversial threads and posts get more visibility.
Add that people like the dopemine hit from seeing their opinion validated with bright numbers and stupid badges and you've got a recipe for entirely skewed views that get more and more insanely incestuous.
