Silicon Valley Bank recently collapsed. It was caused by SVB being utterly retarded. As a bank, you take deposits, loan out the money, and collect interest on the loans. Additionally, banks have Certified Deposits (CDs) that pay out interest to the people who buy the product. Basically, an individual loans money to the bank for a fixed amount of time in exchange for interest. It cannot be withdrawn without heavy penalties. The higher the interest rate on CDs, the more the bank has to pay out to its creditors. Back on topic, SVB took deposits and loaned them out to tech, crypto, and other risky assets. ALSO, SVB put the depositor money into Treasury Bills. The risk on the loans was bad, but the TBills was what really killed them. As interest rates were raised by the Federal Reserve, the TBills that SVB had went down in value since they are now paying a lower interest rate in comparison to the rest of the market. All of this is "fine" but the real problem started when people came to withdraw their deposits. The bank ran out of liquid assets and had to sell its TBills to cover themselves. It wasn't enough. No more funds, sorry everyone, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is taking over. The FDIC is a government sponsored company that insures each person for $250,000 worth of their deposit in case of a banking failure.
