Usefulness is value, and Bitcoin has massive usefulness as a currency. Combined with it's scarcity and market-share, it's got value.

Until there is a competing coin worth switching to, like Darkcoin, it will probably be king.

Darkcoin adds privacy, and that is usefulness/value.

I expect to see #Darkcoin getting a lot of transaction when the Darksend feature is finished.

There are a lot of competing coins that add stuff like better mining algorithms, energy savings, faster transactions (that nobody needs), and the like. But privacy is something Bitcoin is lacking, something people want.

That's why Darkcoin will be king.

Basically, you buy bitcoins with a bank account from a respectable exchange like coinbase.com

then you take the BTC to a cryptoexchange like cryptsy or btc-e (there are plenty of free ones that allow you to swap BTC for other crypto currencies)

make sure you swap for an anonymous coin like Darkcoin or any crypto that implements actual encryption

now you take the Darkcoin and transfer them to a wallet on your PC, make a new wallet and transfer the DRK there, just for more plausible deniability

then transfer the DRK back to a crypto-exchange (btc-e, cryptsy), exchange for Bitcoin there

take your Bitcoin out of the exchange one more time into your separate Bitcoin wallet (don't use the same wallet, addresses are not the same as wallets either, use different wallets)

Now your Bitcoin is free from the paper trail, use it to purchase drugs or whatever.

anyway, they have a special kernel for darkcoin mining, it's just a flag like "-k darkcoin" in the command line arguments to the program
