Cyrpocurrency General Question:

How do wallets work? I'd like to 'invest' in some altcoins out there, but I don't plan on trading them, more for the long haul. How do I obtain them online, and then how do I store them? I understand you can have an offline wallet, but how does that work? Can I just get a USB drive and put some magic code on it with all the coins I own? If anyone can point me to some references too that would be much appreciated.
