Contact a patent/trademark/copyright attorney in your city or the nearest large city the size of Tampa, Boston, etc. Make sure the firm has more than 4 attorneys (shows they are busy) and that they have a minimum 10 years experience. Talk with one of their paralegals...she will guide you if your idea is potentially good and she'll research shit for you at a cursory level for free (usually).
Its a start...I have two patents and trademarks on genetic insular material and this is what someone else told me 15 years ago and seemed to work for me. Good luck!
