The idea usually around the idea of a support level that you considering the breaching of to be a sell signal, or, you're riding a mooner and put a trailing stop on to hopefully get out before the dump starts in earnest. Most of the time i have a price level where, if drop below, i want to cheese it out, but i don't use a stop for that as i want to see whether it'll rebound by end of day or at least the following day. This will be a worse exit (as opposed to having a stop order set) if the drop is for real but in exchange i stay in if it's just a momentary blip.
