Think I'll have to do it gradually. After those two weeks I had massive urges and just couldn't stop myself from jacking off to porn.

Well, larger dogs are better if you don't have a yard because smaller dogs can't hold it that long. Typically an adult large dog can, but getting a dog walker to come in the middle of the day might work if you have the money for it. Or you could take it to a dog daycare, but again it's a bit expensive. If you have a yard that would also work. Mentally, I think it would be ok but it depends on the dog. Dogs (or at least mine) sleep up to 14 hours a day and spend lots of time resting. Some dogs are clingy (huskies are notoriously social and need to be with people or dogs all day) and others are fine doing their own thing. As long as you give them a walk before and after work, leave them with interesting toys/chews to keep them occupied when you leave and spend some time playing with them every day it should be fine. From the dog training classes I've taken with my dog I'll say the most challenging breeds for a starter dog are ones that are purebred and typically have a job like malinois, huskies, GSDs, aussies, cattle dogs, and pitbulls. The easiest seem to be labs (although they eat EVERYTHING), golden retrievers, mutts, any sighthound, and poodles.
