There's a term for this effect, it's like the wealth effect. Basically, when people see the value of their accounts go up, they feel like they have more money, and are more likely to go out and consume. And yes, 401k's are a type of account people check at least a few times a year.

If they see the value has fallen, they are less likely to go splurge on christmas gifts or whatever. The American consumer is unironically very important to the global economy. If they become savers instead of spenders, that would be incredibly DEflationary, and could be very very difficult to reverse. There's many stories about this in Japan for example.

Many parts of the world are extremely bearish right now, and people are reigning in their spending. Very dangerous if the US becomes one of those places. We actually need our reckless dumbass mall shoppers and drunk internet orderers to spend themselves back into having no savings.

Because money in savings accounts, although it's good for yourself and your friends and family to have savings, it's actually a bad thing if everyone else is doing it.

Countless traders did what Burry did and timed it better, but also many did and timed it worse. Burry lucked out. Everyone who was just a little earlier than Burry, or had just a little bit less capital to maintain their position ... They were just as "right" about CDS'es... they had their insides liquified when they hit the pavement.
