they used to use ponies but they'd get spooked underground and smash their stupid head in on the roof. Shetland ponies did a bit better because they were bred for mining and couldn't reach the roof, but burros and sometimes mules were the standard until engines took their place. Or horses on a topside windlass. That worked too.

in your area I think they mostly used chinamen. Here we shot chinamen to keep wages up for horses.
