Weekend threads are a good time for due diligence, research, pretending that you're going to work on an ML alg, and reading about how options work
near term options are one way that you *could* make fistfuls of cash, but I've always been at a total loss for everything that I've held to expiration.
I want you to look at my graph for the year, here's some a quick & easy on my trading history:
>held about 500-1000 bucks in XIV through VIXplosion
>make it back
>see FB falling on Cambridge Analytica FUD
>buy the dip 1-2 days into it
>oh, it's not a dip... how do I jack up my leverage?
>buy short term options on FB
>lose twice as much, twice as fast as I had from VIXplosion
>literally net negative
>realize it's a long haul play
>inject another 10-20 grand into my account
>buy 4-9 month out options on FB
>make it all back over the most stressful month of trading I've ever had -- go about 1 or 2 grand over my previous high
>play it safe for like 2 weeks
>short bond market with 3-9 month out options
>bond options start doing EXACTLY what I thought I would
>get greedy and chase with short term options
>suddenly it stops falling despite the feds announcing ADDITIONAL rate hikes
>lose all the bond options money I made, literally 1 grand or more expires worthless
I only made money off options that were bought about 3-4 months from expiration and sold at least 2 months from expiration.
