It does not happen just with a bunch of words spoken out. That is what I can tell you. You really have to mean it. If someone on earth can see that you are not serious about something, then God can also see it.
So first of all, whatever you say, you have to mean it with your heart.
Then repent for your sins, ask for forgiveness and say that you are sorry and that you are a broken mess which can not handle anything alone in this world without God and ask for the help of Jesus which died on the cross for you. That is basically what I did. Before that I also read the Apostles' Creed, where I already broke in tears, as I felt how Jesus was real and that he really died for me.

I have seen testimonys from people that didn't pray to him at all before. I for myself have to say that I prayed to him for a few weeks before this happened to me. In the bible stands that God wants to know you and have a personal relationship with him. That's all I can tell you anon. I hope it helps.
