>Why not just start throwing a set amount into Acorns?

I can do this myself and better manage my risk profile. I don't broadly like bonds really... even though I'm collecting and allocating to etfs. can you check what grade of bonds are in the acorns portfolio? their turnover rate in the funds held? can you get etfs that cover only large cap equities or are you stuck with broad market? can you find a small cap fund for when the time is right? can you control your income so that you don't have additional tax liabilities?
I agree with the idea of picking a few etfs to act as a core and then putting emphasis on certain sectors. It's what I would normally do, but I like having the flexibility of more effectively managing my risk. Whether I'm actually good enough to do it where it pays off is a different question, but I'm absolutely for attempting to prevent myself from losing money from stupid (read: risky) investments or getting unnecessary exposures.
