but it's actually even more interesting. Unlike nakamoto where the probability is based on the somewhat indeterminate likelihood of some actor being able to usurp the longest/heaviest chain at some point in the future, in avalanche the probability is mathematically defined and is parameterized to a specific value which I believe is set to 10^-20. This probability is also only for consensus performed on any single block, once a block is finalized (which occurs in under a second with 0 additional confirmations) it is final forever and the chain cannot go backwards. So basically the chance of a consensus failure is mathematically equivalent to zero and only applies to a single block on a single chain that isn't finalized yet.
