in case anyone thinks I’m just being a retarded pol brain, I’ll explain. The efficiency standards are done with relative numbers instead of absolute numbers. Larger trucks are more efficient when at full load. Small trucks have far less emmisions and have greater gas milage in absolute terms but not relative. But what percentage of trucks are driven at full load? Or any load at all? Most trucks are driven by dudes who are just commuting to work. So now we have millions of giant empty trucks burning twice as much gas, but hey if the owners start hauling full loads then it would totally be different! Anyway thats why we can’t have small affordable trucks: california democrats and then nationally when obama took over.
