It's easy to call BS in retrospect when you have more clarity over a situation. What people sperging now don't remember is that we had none of that clarity initially back in December and January.

I've never been fully on-board the gloom and doom train. I think the economic damage is far going to outweigh the health issues. That said, the fact that this was a new virus mutation and needed to be treated as a life-or-death matter (see SARS) shouldn't be a question here. Treat it seriously, collect data as much and as quickly as possible, and then adjust policy from there. There's nothing wrong with an abundance of caution when you're facing a new and unknown pathogen.

Now that we know more, we can begin taking more calculated risks. But to think that we've stopped a new virus when we have no vaccine and are unsure of our levels of herd immunity is risky. A gradual roll-out is the best we can hope for without shooting ourselves in the foot, but we should still be prepared for the worst.
