As for the most likely course of action, retail trading will likely be cutoff at some point, and the XRP ledger may or may not be accessible to normal people ($2k XRP=$40K just to get on the ledger will do that). So having a real account on the ledger is going to be a must going forward, for XRP holders at least.

Another perspective is, say banks are only using 50 million XRP locked in escrow right now (Private XPR, if you will). After using it, the price goes to $1 million per XRP. Eventually, someone's going to say, hey, what about all this other XRP out there? Maybe we can buy and use some of that. So even if the system is closed off, there's always going to be a way to move across ledgers.
