So I have like 50k sitting in VOO and SPY (I have other money but this thread is about this specific money).

For examples sake let's say it was all purchased at 100 per share. Today it is 110 per share so I'm up 10%. If I set a stop limit order that is GTC or just renew it every day at say 105 (so a 5% drop) how can I ever lose?

Of course I would update this order appropriately as the stock price changes but in a market driven index fund how am I not just cutting out all of the downside risk? If the markets collapse I only eat a small loss and if it tanked 5% its probably going to keep going down for a moment so I can buy back in even lower.

What am I missing?
