Yep, this is what I do. If I was starting from your position I would:
1. Stop taking on any work that takes longer than half a day. Say you’re too busy. If they fuss, you can add them in for two months time
2. Whomp up as many new clients as poss. Flyers, local paper adverts, ask happy old clients for referrals, whatever.
3. First clients charge lower you can. Once you’ve covered that month start quoting higher and higher numbers looking for the sweet spot
4. Set aside time every week for invoicing and do it - even if there’s a deadline the next day
5. Get off the chans
