This is such a hard pill to swallow but it's the truth. It will never not be insane to me that there are people out there who do not understand that *not* consuming is always an option. Even crazier, that they often are so deluded that they even go so far as to equate greater consumption with status itself.

"Oh. You didn't spend $5K on a gucci belt? It clearly must be because you can't, chum. You're obviously a broke boy, whereas I am high status because I got one on credit by using my rent money as a downpayment and forcing my children to drink water for dinner.
