It's a depth-pf-field issue. With the tiny apertures of phone cameras, there isn't a plane of focus, it's a spherical shell centered on the lens. If you take a picture of the inside of a ball, it'll all be in focus. There are two ways to mitigate that: close down the iris (but the tiny lens is already... tiny), or get farther from the object and use a zoom (basically enlarge the sphere). Both ideas come with more problems: you need a longer exposure and a steadier platform for the camera and the object.

Bokeh's a bit different, in that the idea is to have a background far enough away from the subject as to be out of focus, like a nearby face with a background of bushes many meters away.
