The whole point is to allow normies to build these things themselves with commonly available parts.

It takes years to build up industrial manufacturing flows for these things and if you farm it out to Chink production lines they just steal your IP and jack up the cost. They can't build their own production lines fast enough, so they design equipment that you or I can go to a hobbyist store and build with off the shelf parts. I can build the Skyminer, this LoRa device, the Antenna, and probably even the hardware wallet with ridiculously cheap, toy parts.

The fact that the people behind Skycoin try to make their hardware as cost effective and as user-serviceable as possible goes a long way to show their decent intentions.
