Kraut here. Amazon started around late 90s as Bookshop and is to this day one of the biggest Corporation in existence. In W. Germany we had Otto and Quelle, who back then in the 90s, already had an giant Network of distribution and storage for Decades. If they would have just transferred the classic catalouge concept into the Internet they would have become what amazon/walmart is today. Its just that the "Ami" has to do it first, so we now its not "nadsi" and okay to do so.
As Op already pointed out, when you talk to the average Hans about finance, they think about italian cars if you say Fiat.
