no matter when or where, as long as there has been a large society there has been some form of currency. for thousands of years the main trade between nations, nobles, and peasants has been silver and gold.
yes, during the fall the only metal that means anything is lead. but after a collapse is when silver and gold shine.
the rich and powerful will always, always, always want to show off and they won't do it cheap because frugal isn't flashy. if they have thousands of acres of land then what's losing 100 for an ounce of gold to catch the eye of a 10/10?
