Hope you told him don't invest money you can't afford to lose. Even if it wasn't a scam website that's just stupid. Nothing is ever 100% safe.

It happens. I know someone who fell for one of those scams. They could have checked with me of course, but why do that when they can trust a stranger on the internet who contacted them out of the blue! As far as I know they also didn't lose much more than what your friend lost so it's a cheap lesson overall. Would have been cheaper to be scammed in video games as a 6 year old though.
