Gold is about CAD $2650 now, so $4k/ 2650 = 1.5 ozt at spot. The best deal would be something like old Euro Francs (Latin Monetary Units) such as pic related. They can often be found for 2 to 3 % above spot.

For modern coins, I second Anon's notion that quarter ozt is minimum size.
For a coin because gold, old Latin Monetary Units have very low premiums.

There are many online vendors that are reputable, and I've had no problem in a dozen years of buying from online vendors.
JM and assayed bars are not the least expensive way to go though. I'd recommend Latin Monetary Units (francs, ducats, coronas...) for small amounts. THey usually have low markups. A good burger vendor to start with would be silvergoldbull.

Look up European Sovereigns on SilverGoldBull. Wait for them to be in stock. Their premiums are typically very low. They have no numismatic potential, but they're well-recognized, interesting, and affordable ($350-370 range).
As far as I can tell, their official classification is "Latin Monetary Unit", and there are several types: the Swiss miss, French Marianne, others. Beware the British sovereign: they have a higher markup.
