Hey /biz/, brainlet here with a US question concerning capital losses taxes and how it applies to reducing my taxes.

Is it a dollar for dollar reduction directly my owed taxes or is it a dollar for dollar reduction in what the IRS views as my total income (as I understand capital losses are), thus reducing my calculated income and reducing taxes in that way?

Things I know about capital losses:
-Up to $3,000 a year max, but a capital loss suffered in one year, say, $4,000, could be applied in the tax year as $3,000 and the following year as $1,000.

-When you liquidate something of your's, you are not allowed to buy it back and have it included in capital losses if has been more than 30 (31?) days since you initially bought it.

I ask these questions as I want the government to be ok with crypto and give them their fair share. I like to make my money cleany, but spend it any way I wish.
